A Brief Note On The Race And Ethnicity - 850 Words

Race and ethnicity have always been a difficult topic to talk about, but not because I am embarrassed, but because to this date I’m still confused. Most of the time I find myself confused and asking questions such as, who am I? Where do I belong? When I get asked about my race I always say Hispanic or Latina; I don’t even know what I am. In high school my Spanish teacher once told me that Hispanic and Latina is not the same thing. Hispanics are individuals who are related to Spain and Latinos are individuals who are related to Latin America. However, there is also Chicano/ Chicana, a person who is born in the U.S but their parents were born in Mexico. Society identifies me as Hispanic or Latina because I speak Spanish and by the way I look, they can already know that I’m from Mexico, which I don’t mind at all. I can also be classified as Chicana because I’ am a U.S citizen and my parents were born in Mexico, but I do have a problem with being called Chicana. This is because of my past experiences, when I was called Chicana they meant to call me a chola, a wetback, a gang member along with other names that disrespects who I am. I have also been called pocha by friends or family members from Mexico because I was born in the U.S and even though I come from Mexican parents I don’t â€Å"act or speak like them†. In Mexico I’m not seen as Latina, Hispanic, Chicana or Mexican. For my Mexican relatives I’m just seen as an â€Å"American† or as they would say a â€Å"pocha†. The attacks of 9/11 affected the United States by increasing discrimination, endangering the health of many Americans, hurting the economy and changing foreign and security policies. Much of the tension and terrorism between the Middle East and the United States can be traced back to the twentieth century. In the early 1920s oil became very essential to the United States, therefore the U.S. invested in the Middle East oil industry. Since both sides of the world were connected through this investment, the Middle East was more exposed to western society. â€Å"As Western ideas spread through the region, many Muslims feared that their traditional values and beliefs were being weakened† (Appleby, 1032). In order to continue following the traditional Muslim religious laws, Muslim movements were created to overthrow pro-Western governments in the Middle East. Even though Muslims believed that terrorism is the opposite of their faith, they supported these movements and were called fundamentalist militants. Coral, is also very insecure about life after the death of her son, she is longing for attention and doesnt know how to be around people. By the end of the play she is at least trying to be social and be around people. At the beginning of the play Gwen is a nagging housewife. She is always right, well she thinks she is anyway. She changes into a more sympathetic and balanced individual. Vic has showed her to put love, not possessions and status, first. She was obsessed with orderliness and comfort because of her deprived childhood. This has ruined her relationships with her husband and Daughter. The play The stranger on the shore helps express her predicament and the taking of belief in life that she has found. In the end she is finally reunited with Roy and this changes her life.
